EARLY VOTING BEGINS MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2009
ELECTION DAY IS SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2009
The good news about voting in Austin is that it is easy and convenient. There are a few things you need to know before election day:
What do I need to bring to the polling place?
You will need to bring your voter registration card OR another form of ID to the polls (see the list below).
Acceptable documents are:
- a driver’s license or personal identification card issued to you by the Department of Public Safety or a similar document issued to you by an agency of another state, even if the license or card has expired;
- a form of identification containing your photograph that establishes your identity;
- a birth certificate or other document confirming birth that is admissible in a court of law and establishes your identity;
- United States citizenship papers issued to you;
- a United States passport issued to you;
- official mail addressed to you, by name, from a governmental entity;
- a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address; or
- any other form of identification prescribed by the secretary of state.
What is early voting?
Early voting is when Texas voters are able to literally “vote early” – before election day. Early voting makes the process of voting more faster and more convenient. There are two ways to vote early – in person and by mail. Every registered voter can vote in person.
For the May 9th election, early voting will begin on April 27, 2009 and end on May 5, 2009.
If you are 65 years of age or older, disabled, or you will be out of town during the early voting period and on election day, you may be eligible to vote by mail. For questions about voting by mail, please contact the Office of the Secretary of State at (800) 252-8683.
When does early voting start?
The first day of early voting for the May 9, 2009 election is Monday, April 27, 2009. The last day of early voting is Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Of course, election day is Saturday, May 9, 2009.
Where do I go to vote early?
One of the benefits of early voting is that you can vote anywhere in the city. (On election day, you have to vote at your specific precinct.) Many people choose to vote early because there is a convenient early voting polling place near their office or inside their local supermarket.
