“Brewster and I grew up in Corpus Christi together. We were both raised in households led by strong willed progressive mothers who were passionate and outspoken about their politics. Being a Democrat in Corpus at that time wasn’t exactly a guaranteed path to popularity, but Brewster had an early influence on me in showing that standing up for your political convictions in the face of popular opposition was not only possible, but virtuous. In an environment where the easiest thing to do would be to go with the crowd or keep quiet, Brewster always set an example by being extremely well informed, as well as a strong and vocal advocate for Democratic ideals and that’s always stuck with me.”
